Why Americans Should Care

Perhaps you could explain 1) Why Americans should care what the French think and 2) On what grounds they have to maek such a charge given their vast corruption on matters of selling military hardware to Iraq during the sanctions.
This is a response to a comment by M. Wardell to a posting of news article that the French Government is about to indict Vice President, Richard Cheney, for business crimes committed while he ran Haliburton. He asks why Americans should care what the French think. This is irrelevant to ask and mis-directs Americans from the better question, "Why should Americans care about allegations that our Vice President has committed criminal acts during time he ran a Corporation which is even now accused of fraudulently stealing from our Military and the taxpayers? " I do care and point it out not because my opinion will decide the issue of his guilt or innocence, but because the fact is, he will not be around this November when President, Bush seeks a second term in general election. Bush will have to find a new Vice President and I'd like to hear who YOU think would be a good Vice President.Personally I go back to the original intent of the Founders concerning the election of President and would select the second place finisher in the popular election, in this case it is, at this time, Gov. Dean. In the event of death or other succession of the highest office, we should have the person most popular until a new election is held.
He further asks, "On what grounds they have to make such a charge...? I'll dismiss the last portion as irrelevant to the question as it has to do with Law. I believe the article disusses the grounds well enough and will only recount that the charges concern bribery of about 180 Million dollars and setting up bank accounts to escape taxation.
This new Anti-Frank attitude of the 'neoconservatives' is about reached it zenith in calling for the categorizing of France as a 'Terrorist State'. I remind Americans that this is the Nation which made our Revolt of 1776 succeed. They are allies of two world wars, and a nuclear power which has never acted with animosity toward the United States in their use. This attitude of teaching Americans to hate French is beneficial only to the British Royalty and should not be influential to us, lest we fall prey to the designs of such dupes of 'monarchial scams'. Unlike the French, who allied themselves to us in our Revolution, it was Great Britain that sought to murder or forefathers and have been animous to our freedoms and self-determination in War of 1812 and after.
It is true that Bush is a anglophile and his blood line is traceable to England, so I can understand how he would act in Britain's best interests, but I won't be led into more 'hatred' in this hateful world just because of the Anglophilia of one person or a group of neurotic men set on manipulating Americans into letting their Sons and Daughters die on foreign soil in matters that don't concern us, ,so they can make money. I say "NeoCons, get a job" "Go PRODUCE or CREATE something for a living, because you're just Corporate welfare recipients living on American workers wages".

Although I agree that we should care, you didn't use your essay to support your case. The indictment of Cheney for business practices in France are important because ciminal behavior is criminal, no matter what country you live in.

There has been no indictment of Vice President Cheney and today's news makes it less likely. "In a letter to the attorney general's department, magistrate Reynaud van Ruymbeke ruled out directly prosecuting Cheney on a charge of bribing foreign officials" although lesser accusations are still floating around. The actual story seems pretty convoluted, involving Kellogg, Brown & Root (KBR), a Halliburton subsidiary, and a French company, Technip, to supply a gas complex to Nigeria. So a subsidiary of a company that VP Cheney was president of may have worked with a French company that may have bribed Nigerian officials. No one is claiming that VP Cheney was actually directly involved in illegal activities. Any actual bribes would have been made by the French company, which is why the investigation was launched in France in the first place.

The countercharge has been leveled that France has launched a witch-hunt because they were excluded from contracts to re-build Iraq.

I am somewhat of a stickler for historical accuracy and wish to point out France is hardly the nation that made the American Revolution succeed. France supported the American Revolution as a tool against England. French Minister Vergennes said in 1775, "The Americans will triumph, but they must be assisted in their struggle; for if they succumb, they would join the English, turn round against us, and put our colonies in jeopardy. We are not yet in a fit state to make war. We must prepare ourselves, keep up the struggle, and with that view send secret assistance in a prudent manner to the Americans." The French were confident that the Americans would win with them or without them and looked to gain an advantage for themselves.

Larry Kuperman:

I find your recount of the War of 1776 to be in disagreement with my study. The letter you mention was part of the negotiation with the King of France to get them to come to our desperate aid as we were without money, arms or experience to hold out much longer. To say America would have won without French money and army assistance was clearly not the opinion of the residents of New York who had actually prepared a letter of surrender because the end was that close when the French fleet showed up. I won't go into it now, as this is a blog site, but have a first draft of a history of America from the period of 1755 to the election of Jefferson in 1800, and would be glad to discuss this issue with you at some length. I assure you this view is but part of popular myth Americans have created since they fought in bare feet during the winter snows of the Revolutionary War of 1776.

My e-mail is at: wahkonta@graffiti.net Send me an e-mail address and I'll go into this as far as you'd like to go.

As to the rest of the blog, I still hold forth the ? Who would you like to see Bush have for his new running mate in November? It is going to happen that Cheney resigns whether due to French indictment or health or other matters.
